Their skilled practice and expression of the lessons learned through such journeys was then shared with their tribe as a form of medicine, celebration, collective identity confirmation, unity with the physical world and appeals to the gods and fates to be merciful and beneficent.

Time passed and local societies became subsumed by more autocratic religious practices such as Christianity and Islam. This lead to a decline and desicration of such practices. They were marginalized and even criminalized.
It has taken 2 millennia for us to win back the right to play and practice. Our new high priests of wisdom are DJs, musicians, communicators of the esoteric and inventors of psychoactive concoctions. Tuition and practice is thankfully growing. Festivals are flourishing, with the sad exception of these Covid infused days. Government is begrudgingly softening is stance. People are taking up the practice and teachers as the new high priests of wisdom are emerging. We gather, we play, we live, love and fuse together – non duality in action. Bring it on !
